Will a monitor arm fit both your screen and your desk?

Screen weight, mounting pattern, desk construction and clearance are separate checks.

Our starting recommendation

Do not choose an arm from screen size alone. Match the screen and the desk to the exact mounting instructions.

Check both sides of the mount

A monitor arm connects two things: a screen and a desk. Compatibility on one side does not establish compatibility on the other. Before buying, find the monitor's manual, the arm's installation instructions and the desk manufacturer's mounting guidance. Keep the exact model numbers with your notes.

The Autonomous compatibility page directs buyers to size and weight specifications for its arms. Use the stated limits for the particular arm you are considering; do not transfer a limit from another product or assume a screen's diagonal tells you its weight.

The monitor worksheet

RequirementWhere to check
Weight without the original standMonitor specification and arm's supported range
Mounting patternMonitor manual, arm plate and any specified adapter
Rear clearanceRecessed mounting area, ports and plate dimensions
Included hardwareSpecified screws, spacers and assembly instructions

For a spring-assisted design, check the lower supported load as well as the maximum. For an unusual, curved or wide screen, look for explicit compatibility information rather than relying only on a nominal size range. If the instructions are unclear, get an answer from the manufacturer before buying.

Now inspect the desk

Check the mounting method, permitted top thickness and required flat space. A clamp may be obstructed by a rear support, cable tray, drawer or beveled edge. A grommet mount has its own requirements. Follow the desk and arm manufacturers' instructions for the surface material; do not improvise a mounting method from a photograph.

Measure the clearance behind the desk and along the arm's movement. Check whether repositioning the screen would hit a wall, shelf or another monitor. Plan cable slack throughout the supported movement. If mounting requires modification that the desk manufacturer does not permit, choose another solution rather than assuming a stronger clamp fixes it.

When keeping the original stand is better value

An arm is useful when its movement or recovered surface area solves a real problem. If the existing stand already puts the screen in the right place and your desk cannot accept the mount, an arm adds cost without a clear benefit. We have not tested arm stability, durability or load capacity.
