Sketch the arrangement before ordering
A stand moves the laptop, but it also changes the space available for everything around it. Mark the proposed base on your desk and add your keyboard, mouse, notebook and charging cable. Check whether opening the laptop screen brings it into a shelf or an external monitor.
If your plan involves typing for long periods with the laptop raised, decide how you will use a separate keyboard and pointing device. Include them in the budget rather than treating the stand as the only purchase. This is a practical layout consideration, not a promise that an accessory will prevent discomfort or treat a health condition.
Fixed and adjustable stands solve different problems

Read compatibility beyond the screen diagonal
The Rain Design mStand page provides product dimensions and compatibility information. Use the current specification for the exact stand, then compare the laptop's physical base and any case or feet. Two laptops with the same screen diagonal can have different bodies.
Check where the support lip contacts the computer, whether ports remain accessible and whether the laptop's ventilation is obstructed. Use the computer manufacturer's ventilation instructions. Avoid interpreting an accessory's material or open shape as proof of a particular cooling improvement.
Work out the total cost of the arrangement
Count any separate keyboard, mouse, longer cable or external webcam you need. If a fixed stand forces you to replace several otherwise adequate accessories, compare that complete setup with a different arrangement of the equipment you already own.
Our recommendation for a permanent desk is to choose the simplest stand whose measured footprint and height fit the planned layout. For frequent travel, the folded dimensions and carrying weight may outweigh desktop appearance. Check your own device on receipt, follow the load instructions and keep the packaging during the permitted return period. The best value is the arrangement you can use every day, not the smallest stand-only price.
