Compare the real total, not the discount badge
Use one matched item, one currency and the charges you will actually pay.
Our starting recommendation
Compare final totals only after matching the product, condition, delivery and return terms.
Match what is being sold
Before using a calculator, record the exact model, capacity or set number, quantity, condition and included accessories. Identify the actual seller, not just the marketplace hosting the page. Two listings with the same photograph can still offer different packages.
The FTC's online shopping guidance recommends comparing sellers and products, reading terms and keeping purchase records. Our approach turns that into a worksheet: first match the item and conditions, then compare the money. A lower number for a refurbished product does not establish a saving on the same new product.
Separate an item price from the amount due
| Charge | Quote A (USD) | Quote B (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Item | 100 | 92 |
| Shipping | 0 | 12 |
| Tax | 8 | 8 |
| Eligible immediate discount | 5 | 0 |
| Total | 103 | 112 |
In this invented matched example, A costs USD 9 less even though B starts with a lower item price. Enter only charges not already included in the base price. If shipping or another mandatory amount remains unknown, you do not yet have a complete comparison.
Dupe vs original total cost: compare the budget and the differences
In shopping discussions, a “dupe” is an alternative chosen for a similar look or purpose. It is a different product, so first list the differences in material, dimensions, included parts and return terms. Do not mark it as the same item in our matched-quote calculator.
Is a dupe cheaper after shipping? In this fictional USD worksheet, the alternative costs $30 + $8 shipping + $3 tax = $41. The original costs $45 + $0 shipping + $4.50 tax = $49.50. With no other charges or discounts, the alternative needs $8.50 less upfront. These are invented amounts, not current prices or tax-rate guidance.
That arithmetic does not establish equal quality, fit or useful life. Record unknowns rather than assuming the alternative lasts as long. Check return shipping separately as a possible later cost; do not add it to today's checkout total unless it is actually due. If the cheaper item cannot do the job, the upfront gap is not enough to decide.
Keep conditional benefits separate
A future store credit, a rebate application and a discount applied at checkout have different conditions. Do not subtract a future credit from today's amount due as though it were cash already saved. Note its expiry, eligible uses and whether you expect to make another purchase without being prompted by the credit.
Similarly, a membership price must be evaluated with any fee needed to obtain it. If you already pay for the membership, record that assumption. If you would join only for this purchase, count the necessary fee and understand any renewal. Avoid spreading a new fee over hypothetical future shopping to make today's purchase look cheaper.
Use one currency and comparable observations
Our comparison tool uses one currency per quote and does not convert currencies or fetch prices. It requires recent observations and matching conditions before presenting a difference. For a cross-border purchase, obtain the actual payable currency, payment-provider charges and known import costs before drawing a conclusion.
Return terms can outweigh a small price gap. Note who pays return shipping, whether opened items are accepted and whether fees apply. Retain a dated record of the selected variant and terms without account or payment details. Dealcopia's downloaded comparison removes URL queries and fragments, so record important non-private variant information in the item description. This is a method for evaluating quotes, not a guarantee that a merchant will honor a price.
