A USB-C dock with two HDMI ports may not give you two desktops
Check the computer, operating system and display modes together before buying a hub or dock.
Our starting recommendation
Choose a dock from a supported configuration for your exact computer, not from the number of display sockets.
Count independent screens, not connectors
Write down what you want on each screen. Two monitors showing the same content are mirrored; two monitors extending your workspace are a different requirement. A dock can have enough sockets and still fail the second task on your computer.
The CalDigit USB-C Dock page gives different Mac and Windows display configurations and explains an MST limitation for dual extended displays on macOS with that dock. That example is a reason to check a specific model's compatibility table, not a claim that every dock or every Mac has the same limit.
Use the computer model and operating mode
CalDigit's MacBook support chart separates computer models and includes operating-mode conditions for some configurations. Find the exact chip and model of your laptop, the dock model and the intended resolutions and refresh rates. If the support table does not cover your combination, ask the manufacturer before purchasing.
Also decide whether the laptop screen must remain open. A setup that works only in a specified closed-lid mode may be unsuitable when you need the built-in camera or screen. Display support should be checked with that real work pattern in mind.
A useful dock worksheet
| Component | Your requirement |
|---|---|
| Host | Exact computer, operating system and connection standard |
| Displays | Independent or mirrored, each resolution and refresh rate |
| Power | Power supplied to the laptop and the included adapter |
| Accessories | Storage rate, Ethernet and the USB ports used at the same time |
Check each cable as well. USB-IF describes cable power-capability labels, but a power rating does not by itself establish a cable's video or data capability. Buy for all of the required jobs, including the cable between laptop and dock.
When a simpler adapter is enough
For one display and occasional file transfers, a small compatible adapter may be easier to carry and less expensive than a powered desktop dock. For a permanent multi-screen desk, a documented supported combination may justify the higher cost. Paying for unused sockets has little value if the display configuration remains wrong.
Include the power supply, display cables and any required adapters in the total. Check for software installation requirements on managed work computers. During a permitted return period, test waking the system with every intended accessory connected. These are our selection checks; Dealcopia has not tested dock throughput, sleep behavior or display compatibility firsthand.
